Spending time with God can be a daily struggle. We are so busy running after our kids, working, taking care of our husbands, and cleaning, that it’s hard to take a breath, let alone set aside 30 minutes for quiet time. With the New Year quickly approaching, many of our resolutions may be centered around growing spiritually. We all want to spend more time in prayer, read the Bible in a year, and wake up on fire for God, but that doesn’t always happen. Today I am going to give you some tips to help you spend time with The Lord on a regular basis.
DO IT EARLY
Psalms 143:8 Says “Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.”
Try your best to spend some time with God before your day gets away from you. This can be as simple as cracking open your Bible before your kids get up, or praying in the shower as you get ready to face your day. Even if you aren’t a morning person, get yourself in the habit of rising and turning to God, instead of to your social media accounts. Start by getting up just 15 minutes earlier each day, and go from there.
LOOK FOR MINDLESS TASKS
Are there times throughout the day where you have to use your hands but not your mind? Some examples would be folding laundry, cooking dinner, driving somewhere, even working out. Instead of letting your mind wander during these times, take them as an opportunity to refocus on God. Pray through these times throughout the day. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Says “Pray without ceasing.” KJV
I think the biggest discouragement people face when spending intentional time with God, is that they are afraid not to be able to fit it all in. So they decide to not do anything, instead of spending some time with Him. Speaking out loud can help you to keep focused during these random times. Remember that we don’t need to talk to God just when we are ready, we have the amazing ability to talk to Him whenever we want. Don’t waste that gift.
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 KJV
Talk to your friend or spouse about your desire to regularly spend more time with God each day. Hopefully, they will be able to encourage you and even start this journey with you. Maybe you and your husband can set the alarm earlier, so you both get up together. Maybe have a friend text you every day to check in. But, there are going to be days where you want to snooze your alarm, you’re exhausted to your core, and you just don’t feel like worshipping. Accountability can help you through those difficult times.
USE RESOURCES OUT THERE
There are so many different resources out there that can help you as you look to spend more time with God. Two of my favorites are as follows.
First, Write The Word from Lara Casey.
This is a journal that allows you to write out scriptures and prayers to God every day. You have the choice of picking a journal topic from one of the following five categories; Renewal, Gratitude, Hope, Joy, and Faith. Every day you are prompted with a Bible verse around that topic, and a page to write out what’s on your heart that day. This can be a great and easy way to jumpstart your mornings. Even though it doesn’t take much time, it will get your heart in the right position to be serving and looking for God throughout the day.
Prayer Journals by Val Marie Paper.
This prayer journal is incredible. Each month you are prompted to fill out different areas of your life that you would like to pray for. They include praying for the world, your family, people in your life who have yet to be saved, your home, etc. This is a great resource to take around with you throughout the day. Prop it up on the dashboard and spend your time driving to work praying.
DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP
“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:” 2 Corinthians 9:8 KJV
It can be so easy when you start the process of spending more time with God, to get discouraged when you miss a day or week. Even though it is good and healthy to want to spend time with God, don’t overwhelm yourself with guilt and expectations. For this New Year, I would suggest starting out small and keep your goals for a devotional time lower. Maybe for you, that means reading a chapter out of the Bible a day, maybe it’s just a verse. This could mean that you pray for five minutes, it could mean that you set your alarm and pray for thirty. When you skip a day, instead of wallowing, get right back at it the next day.
“…but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” 2 Corinthians 10:12 KJV
As moms, we compare ourselves to anything and anyone. We compare ourselves to our pastor’s wife, our friends at work, missionary friends overseas, etc. So, it’s only natural that we compare our quiet times. Let what I am about to say sink in. Everyone is unique and created by God uniquely. None of our quiet times can ever be the same. What is going to bring someone closer to God might not make you closer to God. Some people like to pray while walking through nature, while some people like to read thick books on the Bible. Try your best to find what works for you and stick to it. Don’t compare how much time and money you spend to spend time with God. We can never truly know another’s heart, so we will never be able to see how close they are to God. Free yourself from the unrealistic expectations of others in 2018.
SET A SCHEDULE
If you never set aside intentional time to spend time with God, you won’t. Something else will always come up. The kids will need something, the house will be a mess, and dinner will be late. So, make sure that you plan out this time. Start by picking a time of the day where you are normally free. This can be morning, evening after the kids go to bed, naptime, driving in the car, etc. By solidifying this time in your mind, you won’t forget. And, it will help you not to plan anything around it. It may help to set the alarm on your phone to remind you if you need that extra push.
Yes, you are incredibly busy. Yes, you are doing a lot. But that doesn’t give you an excuse to neglect God. Make Him a priority this year and see how this time with Him can transform your life.
