BE THANKFUL AND COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Wishing for more made me realize I had been cheating myself out of happiness and contentment with the now. It's called the PRESENT for a reason. Today is a gift. Read more here about how I try to change the way I think to find contentment.

SOMETIMES WE NEED TO COUNT OUR BLESSINGS:

My house has become a home. A place to rest and recharge. A place to live and create memories in.

It isn’t the cleanest place, but it is ours. Even though I love my home I often always find myself looking forward and wanting more. I dream of owning a small farm with goats and ducks and wildflowers. A space for my boys to roam outdoors and a guesthouse for visitors to stay in.

While rushing out the door for church one evening I ran back into the house to grab something. Everyone was in the car but me. About to shut the door to the house left in disarray, I stopped for a second and gazed at the scene. I then realized while looking at my empty living room with toys strewn about the floor, that I DIDN’T NEED anything more.

Wishing for more made me realize I had been cheating myself out of happiness and contentment with the now. It's called the PRESENT for a reason. Today is a gift. Read more here about how I try to change the way I think to find contentment.

I have been given just enough, if not extra. Wishing for more made me realize I had been cheating myself out of happiness and contentment with the now. It’s called the PRESENT for a reason. Today is a gift. Tomorrow is not promised today. Once again I caught myself coveting. Covetousness is a sin. I now realize why.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH COVETING?

Coveting basically means wanting what you don’t have. Paul says in  (Col. 3:5-6) that “covetousness is idolatry”. I believe it is because it takes the place in our hearts that belongs to God alone. When we set our minds to anything but God and our present blessings we become ungrateful. It’s like opening a gift and instead of cherishing it we are unthankful and look for the next best thing to come along.

It’s hard to be content with what you have when the world is telling you about the “next best thing”. I think it’s fine to want something better or to have future goals or things you want to attain. The problem is that we allow those thoughts to make us blind to the blessings we have today.

REMEMBER TO COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

We need to stick to the beautiful old hymn called ” Count Your Blessings”. It goes like this:

Verse 1: When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Chorus:
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
*Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
*And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Verse 2: Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Verse 3: When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings—*money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

Verse 4: So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

It is a wonderful song full of TRUTH! We have so much to be thankful for! Living in America is a blessing alone. We have so many freedoms and rights that we take for granted because we have never experienced otherwise.

WE NEED TO CHANGE OUR THINKING

When we change our thinking from “What do I want next?” to “Thank you Lord for all you’ve given me today” we can conquer the thoughts of covetousness. All we need to do is look to Jesus, (Heb. 12:2-3) when we consider what he has done for us on the cross we will find we truly need nothing more. There are many things this world will tempt us with to pull us away from God. The one thing it will never offer is eternal life. If you don’t know what that is please read this post here about The Greatest Gift In The World!

Here are a few things we can be thankful for:

Simply waking up this morning. Not everyone woke up or made it to today.

Family and Friends, some don’t have anyone at all.

A home or roof over your head. Everyone should be thankful for a safe place to sleep.

Clothing, shoes, and food. Imagine life without these essentials! Many around the world don’t have these items.

The list goes on. My point is it’s easy for all of us to get caught up dreaming that we lose the blessings given to us today. In my case, it’s my home. There was a time I would give anything to just have a place to call home.I need to remember to be thankful always!

Revelation 7:12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.”

WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?

Take some time today to thank God for the things you have. I know I will.
