I have been dying to share this media cabinet makeover for awhile now! This DIY project was apart of my Mini Apartment Makeover Post, where in 6 weeks I transformed our apartment from basic to OH WOW YES! If you like this makeover I know you’ll love to see the whole transformation, you can find the post here.

This makeover was quite simple really. I don’t have a good picture of the cabinet before but you can see in my apartment makeover post that it was a light wood color. The cabinet itself is particle board covered in laminate so there was no sanding involved because it would have ruined the finish.

The Cabinet Makeover

To start I taped off the glass on the front of the doors. Next I wiped the whole cabinet down really well. It is very important to wipe it all down with diluted bleach, then water and let it dry. Then before I started priming the piece I set cardboard under the legs so I didn’t get paint on the floor. After it was clean I did a coat of gray primer. Primer helps the paint adhere to the project.

After the coat of primer, I did two coats of the yellow paint. The paint I used was glidden speed wall semi-gloss interior paint. The color I used was BEHR PPU6-6 “Locust Honey”. I also used the same paint and color on the wall art I made to go behind the couch in my apartment makeover.

I always always ALWAYS recommend using semi-gloss or at least satin paint when painting furniture. The reason is that its easy to wipe and clean up. Flat paint holds onto dust and when you wipe it you can tell where you cleaned.

Once the paint was dry I removed the painter’s tape. Then I used some extra fabric I had from making some couch pillows to cover the inside of the doors. Using a staple gun I attached the fabric to the wood on the inside of the door.

Finally, I was done! I was very satisfied with the end product. You can see all the steps I took, and what products I used below.
