Our Laundry Room Makeover

When we first moved in a year ago, our laundry room left much to be desired. It’s not really a room, it’s more of an entry from the garage to the house. There’s hardly any space for anything besides the washer and dryer.

Upon moving in I knew it was going to need a makeover. It was filthy when we moved in and I took advantage of cleaning the whole space while waiting for our new washer and dryer to arrive, but that was the last time I touched it.

Our laundry room is the drop spot in our home. It’s here where things get tossed and lost. Like dirty cleaning rags, junk from the car, toys and anything my husband decides to set down upon entering our home.

From looking at the photo above I am sure you agree with me. It’s a little embarrassing to say our laundry room has pretty much looked this way since we moved in. We really needed a way to organize all that junk!

What I really wanted was a second shelf so I wouldn’t have to reach up all the time for everything. I also wanted to create a barrier so things would stop getting lost behind the washer and dryer.

So I made a supply list and headed to Home Depot to get wood for a shelf and spray paint. Then I went to The Dollar store to get storage bins. Next I had my husband move the washer and dryer and clean the space behind there. I’m pretty sure he said he found socks, lint and a lucky penny back there, you know the typical laundry room hostages.

The shelf that was already installed in our laundry room (see photo above) was disgusting. It had spilled cleaner and detergent on it and was dusty. I cleaned it thoroughly and decided to install some contact paper I had left over from another project.

Next I stained the wood shelf. I bought the wood at home depot for $8 it was 6 feet long and 9 inches wide. We cut it down to fit our space which was just over 5 feet. I sanded it and stained it with left over stain I had from another project. We applied polyurethane to it and installed it in our laundry room.  To see every step we took click this link to see How To Install A Laundry Room Shelf.

After the shelf was installed I got started spray painting the plastic bins I got at the dollar store. Before spraying them I wiped them down so they would be free of dust. I chose silver paint for a industrial feel.

I also made labels for the storage bins using my silhouette cameo. You can view my Dollar Store Bins Into Stylish Laundry Storage post here. There’s also a FREE Silhouette Cut File I made so you can make your own laundry storage bin tags like the ones below!

Laundry lint is one of those things that also needed a space. I have a plastic organizer that I have had for ages and never knew what to do with. It fits perfectly between the dryer and the wall so I used that to hold lint and other cleaning products. So I made a little “Lint” decal for it and set it in its place.

Next I wanted to add some art, so I used a frame I found at Goodwill on 50% Saturday for $3.50. To spruce it up I made a vinyl decal with my silhouette machine and applied to the the glass. After hanging the scripture sign I set up the bins and decorated the space. It feels amazingly brighter and more spacious in our laundry room now! Its really exciting to have a clean fresh area to work in.

Look at the before and after! Who knew my messy laundry room could look so bright? My husband was shocked with how it turned out. He actually likes how clean it looks and thinks it was well worth the effort.

This small room is so much more functional now. The organization alone makes it easy to know where everything goes. Now instead of dirty cloths all over my dryer I have a bin to collect them. I know whats dirty, whats clean and even added a place for my son’s potty training accidents. He has his own bin labeled “special wash” so they never end up with our clothes.

It’s probably silly but my favorite part is the lint box. We were storing lint in a mason jar and it looked like we were collecting our hair….uh eww. So I am really happy it has its own place now next to next dryer. No more weird looks when people come through our laundry room into the garage.
