If you read my last post on How To Conquer The Ladder In 2018, then you know where I stand on new years resolutions. One thing I’m doing different this year is picking a single word to live by. I came across another blogger who did this and I thought it was pure genius.
ONE WORD FOR THE WHOLE YEAR !?!
Why one word? What could a single word bring to mind? When we pick a single word to live by, we are thoughtfully considering what we need, want or long to become. When picking a word it is important to know this word must work to inspire you and keep you going, when the going gets tough.
In the past, people would pick quotes for the new year like “Believe in yourself” or “You Got This”. Well, those are nice but they don’t really work for every situation. Now, I know your asking ” Can a single word actually work for EVERY situation, Katherine?” Honestly, I think 99% of the time, depending on your word choice…YES! Now let me explain what word I picked for 2018.
WHY DID I PICK SUCH A SIMPLE WORD?
Well as pretty as simplicity sounded, it just wasn’t simple. Being a perfectionist by nature, I often make things more complicated then they need to be. It’s so bad I hold myself back until things are deemed perfect in my eyes. So For me, the word “Simple” reminds me to find the easiest route to finish things. That goes for everything from my housework to my business. Now that doesn’t mean I’m planning to do a poor job. I just want to be reminded of K.I.S.S
KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID
K.I.S.S or (Keep It Simple Stupid) is a phrase we used back in high school. Not only do I need to keep things simple, but so do you when choosing a word to live by for the new year. If you decide to pick one word for the new year keep these things in mind:
- Choose a word that relates to the common problems you have daily.
- Pick a word that inspires you to move forward with your goals and plans.
- Consider if it will be something that will encourage you through the whole year.
WHY A SINGLE WORD CAN HELP YOU STAY ON TRACK WITH YOUR GOALS
A single word can help you stay on track because you create the definition of it in your mind. The word you chose no doubt has a definition in the dictionary. Along with that, you will create another meaning for the word that is special to your situation. Just like I did with simple, you may have a word you know you need to focus on.
I asked my husband if he had one word he was going to live by for 2018 and he said: “Continue”. His answer to me asking “Why to continue?” was “Well, because in 2 Timothy 3:14 Paul admonishes young Timothy and says “Continue Thou”. He said “When you get discouraged, continue. When you fail and feel like you can’t press on, just continue.”
The list below are some great words I think can help you get a better idea of what to choose for your own.
When you pick a word make sure to write it in places you’ll see throughout the year. A note on your phone, mirror, nightstand. Maybe even on a post-it note that you use as a bookmark. Carefully pick a word, and share it with us in the comments below. Happy New Year!
